About The Bee

The Bee is about much more than its menu; it’s a space where communities congregate, converse, and create. The Bee at Publika is home to its Upfront series which aim to showcase leftfield international artists in a small and cosy club setting and have hosted sell-out shows from The Vaccines, Grimes to Hiatus Kaiyote.

With The Bee Publika’s upcoming February 2017 relaunch, The Bee will introduce new resident nights to remain true to its reputation as one of the region’s go-to live music venues. The Bee will continue to champion and collaborate with the best of local artists and music collectives — such as Raising The Bar and Soundscape Records — to host parties and gigs that guarantee an adventurous night out.

Befitting new beginnings, The Bee at Publika will shed its former neighbourhood cafe ambience to reveal CBGB dive bar-esque aesthetics; complete with increased capacity for live shows and an upgraded stage, sound and lights system along with a revamped al fresco dining and entertaining area.

Since 2010, The Bee has supported a coterie of multi-arts, multi-cultural movers, shakers and doers: it has hosted disco-themed barbecues, dining theatre, and divination readings; and is the site for side-splitting comedy revues and spirited quiz nights. The Bee at Jaya One has hosted the long-running Feedback open mic nights since December 2011.

NEW BEE-GINNINGS: The Bee’s brick-and-mortar renovations, replete with landscaped terrace, will create an intimate venue for scene-setting programming that champions leftfield genres and international performances

KUALA LUMPUR, 7 FEB — In support of The Bee at Publika’s ever-growing evolution, the new year will see the newer-and-improved The Bee set its sights on solidifying its reputation as one of the region’s go-to live music venue for inventive resident DJ parties, themed gigs and international music showcases.

“We’re taking what we do best and doing it better. The Bee has always been, at its heart, a community-driven and functional musical space, having hosted intimate encounters with the likes of Grimes, Lucy Rose, Mac DeMarco and The Vaccines. The Bee is set to re-launch to be the epicenter for music, live, local and beyond, ” said The Bee’s founder and director Adrian Yap.

Get ready to rock, roll and go along for the ride as The Bee at Publika doubles down on its programming to be a more dedicated live music venue, bringing with it an even sharper, stronger focus for local, regional and international acts.

Its sell-out Upfront series returns this year to showcase leftfield, rising international artists for evenings of thrills and spills. To start, French hip hop beatmaker Onra (“Ms. Ho”, “The Anthem”) takes to the stage on 24 Feb to play a live show as well as a DJ set; Australian anthem rock band The Temper Trap (“Sweet Disposition”, “Trembling Hands”) plays The Bee on 9 March; and Canadian brother-and-sister electronic act Tennyson (“Lay-By”, “With You”) is set to charm the crowd on 18 March.

Always in support of music live and local, The Bee introduces new resident events and recurring nights in collaboration with the crème de la crème of local artists and music collectives. KL’s premiere nu-disco and indie rock DJ outfit Indiego & Co has found a new home on Saturday nights at its host The Bee, kicking off with its comeback gig on 25 Feb. The Bee will also debut Femme Bam, its live show curated by girls and for girls monthly on Thursdays. The foremost and fiercest proponents of independent hip hop in Malaysia, Raising The Bar hosts its very own hip hop shindig every last Wednesday of every month. Meanwhile, on 26 Feb over The Bee’s re-opening weekend, KL’s cult sneakerheads collective KLKIX will host a sneaker swap meet.

To mark The Bee’s mission of music excellence, it sheds its neighbourhood café skin to re-surface as a cozy, dive bar-esque live music venue. Monumental redesigns and restorations have been made to maximise the music experience at The Bee, transforming it into a premium live music venue. Its indoor space has been revamped into a live music bar open from 5pm until late, while maintaining its all-day dining services at its outdoor patio from 10am until late on Mondays through Fridays, and 9am until late on weekends.

Make your way into the music hall inside through the Broadway-style incandescent marquee and ticketing booth, a sign of things to come inside. A complete overhaul of the stage, which comes with the latest lighting rigs and state-of-the-art sound system, serves to give The Bee’s renowned shows a much welcomed edge for music lovers, by music lovers. The space has increased its seating and standing capacity to fit up to 500 guests, thanks to new indoor bleachers that guarantee intimate ringside experience during live sets.

The World Is Flat — the pizza joint and sandwich stop celebrated in Singapore’s culinary circles — is set to take over the kitchen at The Bee. This is no foodie fling; with The World Is Flat serving at The Bee by this month’s end, you’ll be able to sample playful, unrestrained food with a modern take on pizza and sandwiches. Think charcoal deep dishes and flaky puff pastries, with bread and dough prepared from scratch onsite, as well as toppings such as duck confit and house cured salmon.

Meanwhile outdoors, punters partial to al fresco dining can expect pre- and post-gig good times at the all-new landscaped cantina-style terrace, replete with a mural commissioned to the city’s finest street artists.

44 Muntri launches Muntri Festival 2016, George Town Festival’s festival-within-a-festival, celebrating new tastes and discoveries

A feast for palates and curiousities in and around the historic Muntri Neighbourhood

KUALA LUMPUR, 26 JULY 2016: George Town, Penang is obviously a land bountiful with some of the world’s best street food. But that’s certainly not all it can offer, and Muntri Festival 2016 is here to prove just that. Presented by 44 Muntri and in partnership with food & drinks platform Tiffin, Muntri Festival promises a weekend of unexpected culinary delights and activities in conjunction with the month-long George Town Festival.
Happening this 27 & 28 August 2016, 11am to 11pm in multiple venues along historic Lebuh Muntri and the streets around it, the carnival of new tastes and discoveries will offer up an exciting array of food, drinks, markets, movies and music in one of Penang’s most hidden gems.

The heritage-rich neighbourhood houses the largest concentration of boutique hotels (Muntri Mews, Muntri Grove, Seven Terraces, Edison Hotel, 23 Love Lane) and popular institutions for thirsty locals– Antarabangsa for wholesale alcohol and Mish Mash for the island’s best cocktails. Also on the same row is famed comfort food at Tai Buan’s Teo Chew Porridge, attractions like the Purrfect Cat Café and the Camera Museum, and cultural centerpieces– the Hainan Temple and the iconic Cheong Fatt Tze, better known as the Blue Mansion.

“Muntri is a truly special place, and the festival aims to shine a light on all the fantastic experiences that can be found here– great food and drinks, charming spaces and things to do for all,” says Adrian Yap, co-owner of 44 Muntri.

“We’re excited to have this opportunity to breathe new life into Lebuh Muntri, to introduce to the public what we consider the underrated sibling of George Town’s major streets. We want to bring this neighbourhood to the fore it so deserves.”

The festivities revolve around gastronomic treats (this is, after all, Penang!), and for the first time ever, 44 Muntri’s Pop-Up Series will bring myBurgerLab, Klang Valley’s founding fathers of new-school burger joints (and winners of last year’s Tiffin Throwdown People’s and Judges’ Choice Burger) to Penang. Burger fans up north will finally get to experience The Geeks’ famed juicy patties on fresh charcoal buns!

Cheong Fatt Tze’s Indigo Heritage Restaurant will be offering a festival-exclusive four-course menu of exciting fusion delights. The delectably fresh RM78++ menu features a roast duck tortilla, grilled Japanese mackerel with pineapple and cucumber and a pandan panna cotta with sago, gula melaka and red bean.
Thirsty microbrew enthusiasts can look forward to 44 Muntri’s tenant bar TAPS’ Craft Beer Tasting session – the perfect way to have fun, drink and learn at the same time. Food and craft beer pairings will also be available to those who want a bite with their delicious brews.

There’s no celebration without a great soundtrack, and Muntri Fest has this sorted as select Muntri tenants will host performances from acts such as songstress Dasha Logan as well as island favourites Elsa & Kelvyn and Lemongrass. INCH’s special edition of Moonshine’s Feedback Open Mic will also see up and comers alongside Youtube singer-songwriter Anne Marie Choon showcase their budding musical prowess onstage.
Muntri Markets features a selection of unique and beautifully crafted products that can be found from local independent brands, and will be held along the storefront of all participating outlets.

In a playful touch to the already-vibrant Muntri Street, get your hands on the Muntri Fest Passport to score yourself loads of goodies. Drop by our partner outlets, try their delicious food and drinks, or take part in their activities, and get your passport stamped to win exciting prizes!
